When new turf makes more sense than repairs
Sometimes restoring an old lawn isn't worth it. New turf is usually the better choice when:
- More than half the lawn is weeds, bare soil or a different grass to the one you want
- The lawn has been dug up for plumbing, a pool, solar or building work
- The area has never had a proper lawn, or the soil underneath is poor fill
- You want to change grass type, for example to something more shade-tolerant
- You're preparing a house for sale and need an instant result

Laying turf in south-east Queensland conditions
Our climate is kind to new turf for most of the year. Spring and autumn are ideal, because the grass roots quickly without summer heat stress. Summer laying works too, but it needs more water in the first two weeks. Winter is the slowest time to establish a lawn, especially in the colder, low-lying pockets along the North and South Pine rivers.
Heavy clay is common through much of the district. Turf laid straight onto compacted clay often struggles with waterlogging after storms and cracking in dry spells, which is why we break up the surface and add a layer of turf underlay soil where it's needed.
Shade is the other big factor. Many established blocks in the hills suburbs, like Albany Creek, Everton Hills and Ferny Hills, have large gums and neighbouring trees. Couch won't last in heavy shade, so we'll steer you towards a variety that will.

What's the best turf for Moreton Bay?
It depends on sun and use. Couch varieties like TifTuf suit full sun and heavy wear. Soft-leaf buffalo handles part shade well. Zoysia is slow-growing and low maintenance. We'll recommend one after seeing the area.
How long before I can walk on new turf?
Keep foot traffic light for the first two to three weeks while the roots grow into the soil. Once you can't lift a corner of the turf, it has rooted.
How much should I water new turf?
Water daily for the first week or so, enough to keep the turf and the soil just below it moist, then gradually water less often but more deeply. In hot summer weather it may need water twice a day at first.
When should new turf be mowed?
Usually after two to three weeks, once it has rooted. The first cut should be on a high setting and only take the tips off.
Can you lay turf in winter?
Yes, but it roots more slowly and may stay a bit pale until spring. If you're not in a hurry, spring is a better time.
Do I need to remove the old grass first?
Yes. Laying new turf over old grass and weeds usually fails, because the old growth comes back through and the new turf can't root into the soil.
Will my new lawn be level?
We grade the area before laying, so the finished lawn should be smooth and drain away from the house. Clay soils can settle slightly over the first months, which a light top dressing fixes.
