Signs your hedges need a trim
It's time to book a hedge trim when:
- The hedge has lost its shape and is wider at the top than the bottom
- Growth is blocking paths, driveways, windows or the view when reversing out
- The bottom of the hedge is going bare and woody
- Branches are touching the house, roof, gutters or powerlines
- Neighbours have mentioned overhanging growth

Hedges in the Queensland climate
Murraya (orange jessamine) and lilly pilly are the most common hedges in Brisbane's north, along with viburnum, duranta, photinia and native screening plants. All of them grow quickly in our warm, humid months. Trimming little and often keeps them dense. Leaving them for a whole summer usually means a harder cut that exposes bare, woody stems.
Timing matters. We avoid heavy cuts in the hottest weeks of summer, when freshly exposed leaves can scorch. Hard renovation cuts are best in spring, when the plant has the whole growing season to recover. Lilly pillies are often affected by pimple psyllid, which makes new leaves blister, and regular trimming that removes affected growth helps keep it down.
Before storm season, it's worth cutting back hedges and shrubs that touch the house or overhang the roof and gutters. Branches rubbing on roofs can damage flashings and fill gutters with leaves, which then overflow in a heavy downpour.

What's the best time of year to trim hedges?
Light trims can be done most of the year. Heavy cut-backs are best in spring so the plant can recover through the growing season. We avoid hard cuts in extreme summer heat.
Can you cut a hedge back really hard?
Many hedges, including murraya and lilly pilly, recover well from a hard cut in spring, though they'll look bare for a while. Some plants, like conifers, don't regrow from bare wood, so we'll advise first.
