The best turf for your yard depends on four things: how much sun it gets, how much wear it takes, how much upkeep you're happy with and how it will be mowed. Get those right and almost any of the common warm-season grasses will do well in Moreton Bay.

Within each type there are several named varieties with different strengths, like drought tolerance, colour and leaf fineness. A turf supplier can advise on the specific varieties they grow.
Start with the shade
Shade is the single biggest reason lawns fail here. Couch and kikuyu need full sun and will thin out under trees or on the shaded side of a two-storey house. Soft-leaf buffalo is the most shade-tolerant of the common grasses, but even buffalo struggles in heavy shade.
Watch the area over a day before choosing. As a rough guide, most lawns need at least four to five hours of direct sun. In leafy suburbs like Albany Creek and Everton Hills, heavily shaded areas are often better as mulched garden beds than lawn.
Think about wear and pets
Couch and kikuyu recover fastest from wear because they spread quickly by runners, which makes them good for kids, dogs and backyard cricket. Buffalo and zoysia hold up well to normal family use but recover more slowly from damage.
Think about upkeep
Fast growers need more mowing. Couch and kikuyu can need cutting every week in summer, and kikuyu will creep into garden beds unless edges are kept sharp. Zoysia grows slowly and needs the least mowing, which suits people who want a neat lawn with less work. If you want the manicured finish of cylinder mowing, choose a fine couch or zoysia.
Preparation matters more than variety
Even the right grass will struggle if it's laid over poor ground. Old grass and weeds should be removed, compacted clay broken up, a layer of turf underlay soil added where needed, and the surface levelled so water drains away from the house. Skipping preparation is the most common reason new lawns thin out after a few years, which we see a lot in newer estates built on compacted fill.
When to lay turf
- Spring and autumn: ideal, with warm soil and mild temperatures
- Summer: fine, but needs watering once or twice a day at first
- Winter: slowest to root, and may stay pale until spring
Whenever you lay it, water daily for the first week or two, keep traffic off it until it roots, and make the first mow a light, high one.
How much turf do you need?
Turf is sold by the square metre. Measure each lawn area as a rectangle or a combination of rectangles, multiply length by width, and add them together. Add around five per cent for cuts around curves, beds and edges. For irregular shapes, it's easiest to have the area measured on site, which is part of our quote for turf jobs.

What's the most low-maintenance turf?
Zoysia is usually the lowest maintenance, because it grows slowly and needs less mowing. It's slower to establish and costs more per square metre.
What turf grows best in shade in Brisbane?
Soft-leaf buffalo is the most shade-tolerant of the common options. In heavy shade, even buffalo will thin, and a garden bed may be a better choice.
